Severance has a knack for bringing fans some of the most unexpected things, but with its Season 2 Episode 4, the show crossed all bars. Since Episode 1, fans have had a theory regarding Helly, and even though it sounded too big to be true, as it turns out, the fans have been right all along. Taking into account the revelation brought to our screens in Severance Season 2 Episode 4, we discuss the theory and its consequences in this guide.
Spoiler Warning:
This article includes spoilers for Severance Season 2. Proceed with caution.
Helly and Helena Theory in Severance Season 2 Explained
By the end of Severance Season 1, we got to know that Helly’s outie is none other than Helena Eagan, the daughter of Jame Eagan, the current CEO of Lumon Industries. Her going into Lumon as a severed employee was nothing more than a publicity stunt to sell a lie to enhance the credibility of Severance to the public.
Fans speculated that after the Overtime Contingency Protocol happened and Helly’s innie blew the whistle, she would not be brought back to the Severed floor. However, in Season 2, she did come back, but was it really her? This was a question on everyone’s mind.
In the first episode of Severance Season 2, fans noted that Helly R. lied to Mark, Dylan, and Irving regarding her outie’s identity, which raised suspicion. They also noticed that her mannerisms were odd and that she was having difficulty turning on her PC, further raising the suspicion. Hence, fans came up with the theory that maybe Helly R is not the innie, but instead, it’s Helena, her outie, and she has been sent down the Severed floor as a mole to spy on Mark and his team.
Helly Revealed to Be Her Outie in Severance Season 2
In Episode 4 of Severance Season 2, we see that Mark and his team have been sent on a twisted version of a team outing where they have to follow “Kier’s Path” for two days in a snowy and unwelcoming terrain. I assume that Lumon sent them here so that the team realizes the outside world is harsh and unwelcoming, eventually getting rid of their desire to see the outside world.
In this episode, Irving has his suspicions regarding Helly and is almost certain that she is a mole. When the MDR team finally reaches the campsite, Irving asks Helly a series of questions regarding what she told them about seeing as her outie. Even though Irving’s questions made complete sense, Dylan and Mark defended Helly. She is deeply angered by this and attacks Irving verbally saying that he is just projecting his pain of not being able to be with Burt.
Following a series of events and a nightmare Irving had, he does something unexpected. Irving grabs Helly by her hair and drags her to ice-cold water while calling out Milchick. He puts Helly’s head underwater, and as Milchick, Mark, and Dylann arrive, he tells Milchick to bring back Helly while constantly repeating Helly to be an outie, a mole, and an Eagan.
Eventually, Helly yells at Milchick, saying, “Do it, Seth!” confirming that Helly is an outie in Severance Season 2.
After contemplating for a second, Milchick speaks on the radio, asking someone to turn off the “Glasgow Block.” With that, the actual Helly R. comes back, and Irving apologizes to Helly for hurting her. Following this, Milchick fires Irving with immediate effect and the episode ends with Irving’s severance chip being turned off for good.
Now the big question is, if this fan theory turned out to be true, how many others will? Only time will answer that question while I wait here to bring those answers to you. So, stay tuned for more such updates!
